(6 may. 1902, Saarbrücken, Alemania–26 mar. 1957, Hamburgo, Alemania Occidental).

Director de cine alemán. Fue actor, director de teatro y productor en Alemania y Austria (1921–30), y obtuvo renombre como director cinematográfico con Amoríos (1933). Abandonó la Alemania nazi y realizó populares pero deslucidas películas en Francia, Rusia, Italia y Holanda, y en 1940 emigró a EE.UU. En Hollywood dirigió La conquista de un reino (1947), Carta de una desconocida (1948) y Almas desnudas (1949). Regresó a Francia para realizar La ronda (1950), El placer (1952) y Lola Montès (1955), considerada su obra maestra. Su hijo, Marcel (n. 1927), trabajó en Francia, donde principlmente se dedicó a realizar documentales, y se destacó por Le chagrin et la pitié (1971), que examina el comportamiento de los franceses bajo la ocupación nazi.
